India has rapidly become a leading global supplier of seafarers, with over 300,000 trained professionals, as highlighted by Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal during the 10th convocation of the Indian Maritime University in Chennai. He noted that significant policy reforms and investments in the maritime sector have transformed the industry under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Opportunities have expanded for graduates in various areas such as ports, shipbuilding, and green maritime technologies.
The modernization of Indian ports since 2014 has notably reduced turnaround times to just 0.9 days, outperforming many advanced maritime nations. Nine Indian ports are now among the world’s top 100. Upcoming projects, including the ₹76,000 crore Vadhavan Port, aim to establish one of the world’s largest container facilities. Initiatives focusing on green shipping and sustainable practices are also highlighted in the government’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which envisions investments of approximately ₹80 lakh crore in infrastructure and eco-friendly technologies.
With a projected creation of 2.5 to 3 million jobs in related sectors, the Indian Ship Technology Centre in Visakhapatnam is set to enhance research and skill development. Sonowal emphasized the importance of innovation and ethical practices among graduates to position India as a leader in the maritime and blue economy.
