Shri Vijay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), emphasized India’s expanding role in global maritime leadership during his address at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly in London. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to safe and sustainable international shipping, which aligns with the IMO’s mission.
In his address, he detailed key components of India’s maritime strategy, touching on seafarer welfare, green shipping initiatives, enhanced security, and global collaboration. He stressed the importance of Indian seafarers, who significantly contribute to the international workforce, and the government’s efforts to improve training and welfare standards. “The wellbeing of our seafarers is central to India’s maritime vision,” he noted.
Kumar highlighted India’s proactive approach to decarbonizing its maritime sector with initiatives like green port guidelines and alternative fuel projects. He reiterated India’s commitment to IMO-led climate goals, advocating for inclusive energy transitions in global shipping.
Lastly, he discussed India’s active role in maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region, emphasizing collaborative international efforts. With India’s candidacy for the IMO Council elections in 2026-2027, Kumar underscored the country’s dedication to influencing maritime policy and fostering a resilient, sustainable maritime ecosystem globally.
