Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, announced the Ministry’s intention to explore the launch of a dedicated satellite or acquisition of a transponder to enhance India’s maritime governance and port management. Speaking on National Space Day, he emphasized the need for advanced space-based solutions to strengthen the country’s coastal and port infrastructure.

The proposed satellite system aims to provide exclusive coverage for India’s coastal waters, inland waterways, and port regions. This initiative will integrate with national maritime databases for real-time vessel traffic monitoring, improving navigational safety and operational efficiency. Sonowal highlighted that such advancements could help identify congestion early and bolster capabilities in search-and-rescue, pollution control, and disaster management. This initiative supports the Prime Minister’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by reducing reliance on foreign systems.
