NEW DELHI: In a significant development, the Indo-Russian strategic partnership reached new heights with key memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed between India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and the Russian Transport Ministry. This initiative underscores a commitment to enhance maritime cooperation and equip Indian seafarers with Arctic-ready navigation capabilities.
The MoUs were formalized during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit, with Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin exchanging the agreements. This move signifies a deepening of bilateral ties in maritime policy, security, and expertise in polar routes.
These agreements are vital for preparing Indian seafarers for polar operations, reflecting a growing strategic interest in Arctic shipping corridors. This is an expansion of the Indo-Russian partnership beyond traditional sectors like defense and energy into maritime security, logistics, and infrastructure.
Additionally, this signing is part of a broader set of agreements on energy, fertilizers, transport, and trade facilitation, highlighting a dynamic shift in bilateral relations amidst evolving global geopolitics.
