The Indian Embassy in Tehran has urged Iranian authorities to grant consular access to 16 Indians detained by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on December 8. The crew members were aboard the MT Valiant Roar, a vessel owned by a Dubai-based company, when they were apprehended in international waters near Dubai.
Despite repeated requests for access since mid-December, the embassy has reported that no permissions have been granted. The crew was reportedly carrying Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil, but Iranian officials accused them of diesel smuggling. The Indian Consulate in Dubai has been actively coordinating with the ship-owning company for legal support and has maintained communication with local agents to ensure the crew’s basic needs are met.
In response to the situation, family members of the detained crew have approached the Delhi High Court, seeking intervention from the Indian government for timely consular support and investigation. The court issued a notice to the Union government, with a hearing scheduled for January 21. Additionally, the parents of one detained crew member have appealed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for assistance.
