India is intensifying safety protocols for its seafarers and merchant vessels in the Gulf amid ongoing regional tensions. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is actively monitoring the situation, particularly in critical areas like the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, in collaboration with shipping companies and international maritime organizations.
The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) has mandated that shipowners and managers conduct thorough risk assessments before navigating high-risk zones. Key measures include enhancing onboard security, continuous vessel tracking, conducting emergency drills, and ensuring updated insurance coverage for ships operating in these sensitive waters.
Shipping companies have also been instructed to keep crew members well-informed on contingency plans and maintain regular communication with maritime security centers. Furthermore, new reporting requirements have been established for Indian-flagged vessels in the region, emphasizing safety.
With one of the largest seafarer workforces globally, India is committed to protecting its crew members who operate in these vital sea routes for global energy and cargo. The government continues to advocate for restraint in regional conflicts and is prepared to provide assistance to Indian maritime interests if the security situation worsens.
