On January 5, 2026, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the Indian Coast Guard’s (ICG) crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s coastline during the commissioning ceremony of the ICG’s first pollution control vessel, ‘Samudra Pratap’. He asserted that the ICG has instilled a significant deterrent effect on potential adversaries, ensuring that any threats to India’s borders would be met with a strong response.
Singh linked the vessel’s commissioning to India’s broader maritime vision, highlighting the importance of shared marine resources as a collective heritage of humanity. He stated that with shared heritage comes shared responsibility, positioning India as a strong advocate for peace, stability, and environmental stewardship on the global stage.
The Defence Minister praised India as a responsible maritime power, particularly in light of current global maritime uncertainties. He noted that India not only protects its national interests but also contributes to peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific region. Singh urged the ICG to enhance its operational standards and technological advancements to set a global benchmark in maritime governance.
Finally, he commissioned the ‘Samudra Pratap’, the first of two Pollution Control Vessels being built by Goa Shipyard Limited, and highlighted the ICG’s potential to assume a leadership role in regional maritime standards.
