The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla has launched a tender for India’s first port-based bio-methanol production facility, a significant advancement in the nation’s green energy maritime efforts. This project, based on Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) principles, is set to produce 10 tonnes per day (TPD), translating to 3,500 tonnes annually, using advanced oxy-steam gasification technology to convert biomass into bio-methanol.
The tender scope includes the complete cycle of design, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and product certification. Bidders are instructed to detail the plant’s operational lifespan, warranties, capital expenditures, and ongoing costs. This initiative follows DPA’s earlier appeal for larger integrated production proposals and its February 2025 collaboration with Bapu’s Shipping Jamnagar Pvt. Ltd. to establish India’s first bio-methanol bunkering facility at Kandla Port.
Officials believe this initiative will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and align with global decarbonization strategies, positioning Kandla as a pioneering bio-methanol hub. DPA emphasizes the project’s potential to transform India’s shipping and energy sectors, encouraging industry participation in this green initiative.
