India achieved a significant milestone in maritime infrastructure with the inauguration of Phase 2 at the Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT) at Jawaharlal Nehru Port, operated by PSA International. This expansion increases BMCT’s annual handling capacity to 4.8 million TEUs, making it the largest standalone container terminal in the country.
The upgrade doubles the terminal’s previous capacity of 2.4 million TEUs, extending the quay length to 2,000 meters. The facility is now equipped with 24 quay cranes, 72 rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), and features direct rail connectivity to the Dedicated Freight Corridor. Senior dignitaries from both the Government of Maharashtra and Singapore attended the inauguration, emphasizing its importance for bilateral cooperation in infrastructure development.
Officials noted that Phase 2 will enhance cargo-handling efficiency, improve vessel turnaround, and bolster India’s trade competitiveness. It is expected to generate new employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in Maharashtra while further strengthening the India-Singapore partnership, supported by PSA International’s $2.3 billion investment in India.
Industry leaders have touted this expansion as transformative for Indian exports, positioning PSA Mumbai as a pivotal player in the nation’s maritime growth and reshaping regional logistics dynamics.
