At the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Canada, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar presented India’s vision for a secure maritime domain, emphasizing the importance of the Indo-Pacific region. He highlighted the country’s MAHASAGAR perspective, advocating for port-led development and international cooperation to enhance global trade stability.
Jaishankar underscored the significance of developing ‘trusted and diversified maritime links’ to improve India’s shipping infrastructure. He positioned New Delhi as a pivotal responder in maritime scenarios and advocated for joint exercises and logistics agreements to strengthen partnerships in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
Addressing key maritime challenges such as piracy and illegal fishing, Jaishankar called for global collaboration to protect vital maritime infrastructure. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), stressing its importance in maintaining a rules-based maritime order essential for national and international prosperity.
