India’s port sector could save up to Rs 20,000 crore annually in cargo handling costs by adopting artificial intelligence (AI), according to Gourav Vallabh, a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council. Speaking at an industry forum, Vallabh emphasized the pressing need for technological updates to eliminate inefficiencies in cargo operations, where manual processes and container delays are currently inflating costs.

“AI offers game-changing optimization for ports,” Vallabh stated, highlighting its potential to forecast maintenance needs, improve tracking, and enhance throughput. This projected savings target focuses on automation at major hubs like the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Chennai, and Visakhapatnam, which are crucial for India’s container volumes.

The initiative aligns with the Sagarmala programme’s goals of faster turnaround times and improved infrastructure. Initial AI trials at ports such as Mundra and Kandla have already shown significant improvements, achieving 15-20% enhancements in berthing efficiency and cargo movement.

Despite the optimistic outlook, challenges remain, including the need for data integration, workforce training, and addressing cyber risks. Policymakers are pushing for stronger industry collaborations to facilitate the swift adoption of AI technology in India’s port sector.
