India is on the brink of a significant transformation in its maritime sector, with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announcing an anticipated investment of Rs 80 lakh crore and the creation of approximately 1.5 crore jobs. This initiative is part of a broader vision aimed at establishing India as a global maritime superpower, focusing on sustainability and economic growth.

Central to this transformation is the Sagarmala programme, which encompasses 840 projects, of which 272 have already been completed. This ambitious initiative aims to modernize India’s ports and enhance coastal infrastructure, thereby boosting trade and commerce.

One of the standout projects is the Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra, which is projected to rank among the world’s top 10 container ports and is expected to generate around 12 lakh jobs. Additionally, Kerala is set to play a vital role in this maritime evolution, with significant expansions underway at the Cochin Port.

As India Maritime Week 2025 approaches, these developments are expected to attract global partners, further solidifying India’s position in the international maritime landscape. The ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to harnessing the potential of India’s vast coastline for economic advancement.
