In a significant advancement for inland waterway logistics in Northeast India, the Pandu Terminal in Guwahati has successfully managed its inaugural Over-Dimensional Cargo (ODC) shipment. The consignment, consisting of 537 metric tonnes of Jack-up Barges from Larsen & Toubro (L&T), is currently preparing for transport to Kolkata.
This landmark achievement enhances multimodal transport capabilities and regional connectivity under the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). The Brahmaputra River, designated as National Waterway-2, is highlighted as a vital route for transporting heavy and oversized cargo. This shift reduces reliance on congested road and rail systems while promoting sustainable and cost-effective logistics options.
An IWAI spokesperson noted that this milestone reflects Indian industries’ growing trust in inland waterways for complex shipments. It demonstrates Pandu Terminal’s operational readiness to handle specialized consignments previously viewed as logistically challenging in the region.
The successful handling of ODC like Jack-up Barges requires detailed planning, advanced lifting techniques, and effective stakeholder coordination. The Government of India’s focus on expanding National Waterways is expected to encourage more industries to utilize riverine transport, reinforcing trade relations between Northeast India and the broader country.
