JSW Infrastructure Limited has received a letter from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee port authority for the reconstruction of berth 8 and mechanization of berths 7 and 8 at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Dock. This project, awarded under a public-private partnership (PPP) model focusing on design, build, finance, operation, and transfer (dbfot), aims to enhance the port’s container processing capacity.
With a 30-year concession period, the initiative aligns with JSW’s strategy to expand its terminal portfolio in line with the government’s privatization efforts. The project involves an estimated investment of £740 billion, slated for completion within two years, allowing operational activities to commence during construction. This strategic approach is expected to significantly boost both capacity and operational efficiency.
This development marks a pivotal moment in JSW’s strategy to diversify its freight portfolio, particularly in the container segment. It strengthens the company’s presence on both the East and West Coasts of India. The West Coast project at the New Mangalore Container Terminal is set to increase its capacity from 0.2 million TEU to 0.35 million TEU. Upon completion, the Kolkata project will elevate JSW’s total container capacity to nearly 1 million TEU, enhancing its position in the Indian port sector.
