L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEG), part of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has entered into a Joint Development Agreement with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation to develop a 300 kiloton per annum (KTPA) green ammonia facility in Kandla, Gujarat. Scheduled for completion in 2024, the plant aims to produce green ammonia primarily for export.
Under the agreement, ITOCHU will purchase this ammonia for use in bunkering operations in Singapore, promoting cleaner fuel options in the maritime sector. This initiative aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets a production capacity of 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030.
L&T plans to utilize its extensive expertise in manufacturing, engineering, procurement, and construction to play a pivotal role in the green energy sector. Analysts note that the Kandla project is part of L&T’s larger strategy to invest up to ₹48,000 crore in various green ammonia facilities, potentially increasing production to 1.8 million tonnes per annum for export to Southeast Asia and Europe.
The partnership aims to enhance India’s presence in the global green fuel market by combining L&T’s infrastructure strengths with ITOCHU’s international trade network.
