Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) plans to invest ₹1,000 crore to expand its shipbuilding complex in Katupalli, Tamil Nadu, aiming to maximize production capacity. Despite obtaining environmental clearances in 2009, the existing setup, which includes a modular manufacturing system capable of producing 50,000 tons annually and servicing 25 ship designs, has proven insufficient. To bridge this gap, L&T will initiate further development at the site.

The expansion will facilitate L&T in achieving its production goals of 50,000 tons per year, alongside constructing 25 new ships and repairing 60 annually. Development work is expected to commence in October, with a timeframe of three years for completion.

The proposed upgrades will occur over the existing 892.11 hectares in Katupalli, and include new manufacturing units, assembly areas, residential spaces, office buildings, and a skill development center. Currently, the shipyard manages around 30 repairs and produces 15 new vessels annually. In 2019, it became the first Indian shipyard to receive a five-star rating for health and safety from the British Safety Council.

Located about 40 km north of Chennai, L&T’s Katupalli facility features advanced design capabilities and supports simultaneous ship construction and repair.
