Kolkata: The Kolkata Port is set to transform three floating vessels—P L Rupsa, P L Hooghly, and P L Gopal—into cultural and tourism hubs along the Hooghly River. This initiative by Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port aims to attract hospitality brands and tourism operators to create cafes, museums, and other public attractions.

P L Rupsa and P L Hooghly, constructed in 1997, each provide 1,000 to 2,000 square feet of space, accommodating 50 to 100 guests. Meanwhile, P L Gopal, built in 1994, offers 800 to 1,000 square feet and can host 30 to 50 guests. This project seeks to reimagine Kolkata’s riverfront by blending tradition with innovation, positioning these floating landmarks as key players in sustainable tourism.

To support this venture, the port will provide free berthing at the Kolkata Dock System for retrofitting, along with complimentary jetty space for passenger and staff movement during operations. The initiative draws inspiration from the successful Bengal Paddle venture, which celebrates maritime history and fosters community engagement.
