The Union government has appointed senior IAS officer M Angamuthu as the new Chairman of the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA). Currently leading the Visakhapatnam Port Authority, he replaces Rajiv Jalota, who retired in October 2024. Since Jalota’s departure, Sushil Kumar Singh of Deendayal Port Authority has been managing MbPA in addition to his duties.
This appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and was announced by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
Mumbai Port, one of India’s oldest and busiest ports, is crucial for handling bulk and liquid cargo as well as passenger traffic. Its strategic significance extends to urban infrastructure and boosting cruise tourism.
The timing of this leadership transition is notable, as major ports in India prepare for significant capacity expansions, digitalization efforts, and green initiatives as part of the government’s Maritime India Vision 2030. This vision aims to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability in the maritime sector.
