Mumbai’s historic eastern seafront is undergoing a significant transformation, with projects valued at Rs 22,672 crore aimed at establishing it as a modern hub for maritime activities, business, and tourism by 2047. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, recently reviewed the plans at the Mumbai Port Authority, underscoring the government’s commitment to revitalizing the city’s maritime landscape.

The redevelopment strategy focuses on enhancing core port operations while repurposing underused waterfront land for public and commercial use. The Mumbai Port aims to achieve a cargo handling capacity of 150 million tonnes per annum by 2047, primarily through offshore liquid bulk cargo. This will be complemented by new facilities for solid bulk transshipment in the outer harbour, alongside initiatives to create a vibrant destination for cruise tourism and maritime business.
