Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the potential of the Rs 4,300-crore National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat, describing it as a significant initiative to preserve India’s maritime legacy. During his visit with Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Sonowal noted that the complex would cultivate national pride and offer extensive opportunities for education, tourism, and international partnerships.
The NMHC is progressing in two phases, featuring 14 galleries, an ancient replica of Lothal, coastal state pavilions, and a 5D dome theatre. Phase 1-A, comprising six galleries and additional facilities, is currently 65% complete, with an expected inauguration in September 2025. The entire project aims for completion by 2028.
Officials revealed collaborations with 25 countries, including Portugal and the UAE, to enhance the complex’s offerings. Additionally, connections to nearby heritage sites are planned to promote tourism and stimulate economic development. Lothal, a key site from the Indus Valley Civilization, was renowned for its maritime trade. The NMHC will utilize advanced technology and an “edutainment” approach to engage visitors and highlight India’s naval history.
Sonowal emphasized that the project aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for comprehensive national development and will set a global standard for showcasing maritime heritage.
