India’s largest oil and gas explorer, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC), is seeking public sector shipyards to build four Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) as part of a government initiative aimed at boosting domestic shipbuilding. These vessels are crucial for providing logistical and essential services to offshore oil and gas operations.

By engaging local shipyards, ONGC intends to enhance self-reliance in maritime infrastructure and strengthen offshore energy logistics. The cost for new PSVs ranges from $15 million to $53.6 million, depending on size and specifications. Larger vessels can cost up to $54 million, while smaller ones are priced between $15 million and $30 million.

ONGC has begun preliminary discussions with public sector shipyards, including Cochin Shipyard Ltd and Hindustan Shipyard Ltd, with a limited purpose tender expected to be released soon. The need for approximately 112 ships, including various oil tankers and offshore vessels, has been identified by a joint working group established last year.

This initiative aims to support the domestic shipbuilding industry, with ONGC and Indian Oil Corporation likely leading the efforts to construct special-purpose vessels required for their ongoing exploration activities.
