An Inland Port project in Jalore, Rajasthan, includes a 262-kilometer waterway connecting the Arabian Sea to the region via Kandla Port. This initiative, poised to enhance the local economy and ecology, is backed by a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on October 28 during the India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai. The agreement involves the Rajasthan River Basin, Water Resources Planning Authority, and the Inland Waterways Authority of India, as stated by State Water Resources Minister Suresh Rawat.
The project requires dredging through Gujarat and Rajasthan to establish a link between Jalore and the Arabian Sea, utilizing the Jawai-Luni-Run of the Kutch River System, designated as National Waterway Number 48. A physical survey of the waterway route, conducted by experts from IIT Madras, is currently in progress, alongside the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR).
Estimated at ₹10,000 crore, the channel dredging costs will be shared by the central and state governments. The project’s completion is expected to significantly improve inland waterway connectivity, creating over 50,000 job opportunities across various sectors while fostering economic, trade, and ecological advancements.
