Vijayawada: The rise of the Satavahana dynasty from a regional power to a significant commercial empire was largely attributed to international trade and maritime outreach, according to Dr. Mannepalli Gundala, Assistant Professor at North Eastern Hill University, Shillong. He shared these insights during a guest lecture at Andhra Loyola College on Thursday.
In his talk titled “Lords of the Three Oceans: Satavahana Dynasty and External Relations,” Dr. Gundala provided a comprehensive analysis of the socio-political evolution of the Satavahanas. He noted that while the dynasty’s origins are debated among the regions of Andhra, Maharashtra, and Telangana, its political strength and cultural development were primarily anchored in Andhra.
Dr. Gundala emphasized that agricultural prosperity played a vital role in maintaining internal stability. However, it was the sustained international trade, supported by a robust standing army, that allowed the Satavahanas to establish themselves as a dominant commercial power.
The event was attended by Dr. Srinivasa Reddy, Head of the Department of History, along with faculty members and students, and concluded with an engaging interactive session.
