Shantanu Thakur, the Minister of State for the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, virtually inaugurated pivotal maritime welfare and infrastructure projects during the Seafarers’ Recruitment and Welfare Symposium held in Kolkata. Among the key initiatives launched were the Seafarers’ Outreach (SO) Centre and the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) Office, alongside the announcement of redevelopment works for Nabik Griha Samity and Marine Club Kolkata.
These efforts are designed to bolster maritime infrastructure and enhance support systems for India’s seafaring community. In his Leadership Vision address, Minister Thakur emphasized the government’s dedication to modernizing maritime institutions and establishing robust welfare frameworks, which aim to position India as a competitive and trustworthy global maritime hub.
Highlighting the significance of these projects, Thakur noted that they represent ongoing efforts to create a responsive, technology-driven, and welfare-centric maritime administration. This commitment aligns with the broader vision of the Directorate General of Shipping, under the Ministry, promoting sustainable growth, improved governance, and long-term welfare initiatives for Indian seafarers.
The inauguration of these projects reflects a strategic approach to address the needs of the maritime community and accelerate advancements in the sector.
