A massive mural chronicling India’s maritime history—from the Indus Valley Civilisation to the present day—is set to be unveiled along the walls of Kochi Naval Base. The Better Kochi Response Group (BKRG) has initiated this ambitious 1.3-kilometre-long project, aiming to create the longest mural in India. BKRG president and architect S Gopakumar announced that, once complete, the mural will be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Speaking at the launch of the project’s brochure, Cochin Shipyard CMD Madhu S Nair highlighted the mural’s role in educating younger generations about the nation’s rich maritime legacy. He noted that India once held 30% of the global GDP and that Kerala’s shipbuilding skills, such as the traditional ‘Urus’ from Beypore, continue to be recognized internationally.

The mural will comprise approximately 250 panels, each curated by a lead artist with assistance from junior artists and students. In addition, the Navy has asked the tourism department to develop a walkway alongside the mural, while the Cochin Shipyard and local builders have pledged financial support.
