Vadhavan Port Project to Boost Container Capacity and Launches Skill Development Initiatives

The Vadhavan Port Project aims to enhance India’s container handling capacity by 23.2 million TEUs, bolstering the nation’s standing among global maritime hubs, as stated by the government in Parliament.

Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted that the project has entered into several agreements to support skill development initiatives. Notably, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University to facilitate educational programs.

Additionally, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and the Directorate General of Shipping have partnered to provide skill training for individuals affected by the project, utilizing selected maritime training institutes.

To further promote local entrepreneurship, the Vadhavan Port Project has also established an MoU with Sahyadri Farms, focusing on enhancing the agricultural value chain. A WhatsApp Chatbox has been launched to improve communication with local youth, making it easier for them to access information and enroll in training programs. Furthermore, training sessions for heavy vehicle driving and mechanical skills are currently being conducted in collaboration with NGOs.
