Vizhinjam International Port has achieved a significant milestone with the arrival of the MSC Virginia, a container ship that boasts a draft of 16.95 meters—the deepest recorded at the harbor and the second-largest ship to dock at any Indian port.
Previously arriving from Mundra with a draft of 16 meters, the MSC Virginia loaded approximately 5,000 tons of freight before heading to Spain. This accomplishment, coinciding with the Onam Festival, has been celebrated as a symbolic gift for Kerala.
This new record surpasses Vizhinjam’s previous maximum of 16.8 meters, demonstrating the port’s capability to accommodate vessels over 16.5 meters. To date, Vizhinjam has successfully managed 17 ships of this size, solidifying its reputation in handling some of the world’s largest container ships.
With a natural depth ranging between 18 to 20 meters, Vizhinjam distinguishes itself as a premier deep-water port in India and enhances its position within the global maritime industry. The port’s recent achievements have been highlighted by the Maritime Gateway, a leading news portal in South Asia.
