Energy and marine consultancy ABL recently completed its role as marine warranty surveyor (MWS) for the transport and re-installation of the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Toscana off the coast of Livorno, Italy. The project was carried out for OLT Offshore LNG Toscana, the owner of FSRU Toscana. The FSRU was successfully towed to the port of Genoa in April 2024, where it underwent maintenance before being towed to Marseille, France for further work. It has since been returned to its site off the coast of Livorno and resumed commercial operations at the end of November 2024.
ABL’s UK operations, based in London, served as the MWS for the de-installation and safe delivery of marine operations, including the tow-back from Marseille to Livorno and the subsequent hook-up and pre-commissioning of the FSRU Toscana. Their scope of work included document review, suitability surveys of support fleet, risk assessment meetings, and on-site attendance to ensure operations were in line with approved documentation. Sergio Leone, ABL’s MWS Contract manager for the FSRU Toscana project, highlighted the technical challenges of the project and ABL’s expertise in marine warranty surveying.
The project was particularly complex due to the tight schedule and the challenges of de-installing subsea infrastructure from a high-caliber FSRU. ABL’s extensive experience in marine operations, maintenance, and decommissioning made them well-suited for the task. Their strong surveyor presence in Italy allowed for efficient on-site support throughout the project. Sergio Leone emphasized the importance of ABL’s expertise and quick response in ensuring the successful completion of the FSRU Toscana project.
