Romanian start-up Recycllux is leveraging AI to tackle marine plastic waste by aiding local communities in detection, collection, and recycling. With backing from BlueInvest, the company is set to expand its cleanup initiatives across the Mediterranean.

Founded by Sorina Uleia in 2021, Recycllux addresses the plastic pollution that marred her childhood seaside. Uleia, equipped with over two decades of expertise in technology and business, assembled a skilled team to create a scalable framework for marine plastic recovery, utilizing innovative technology while empowering community involvement.

The platform employs AI to analyze imagery from the EU’s Copernicus satellite network, pinpointing areas with high plastic concentrations. This data is shared with local fishermen and NGOs, who then collect and sort the waste. Local communities are compensated for their efforts, and all processes—from detection to recycling—are documented on a blockchain-secured platform for full transparency.

Thanks to BlueInvest’s support, Recycllux transitioned from a prototype to a sophisticated, cloud-based platform. Their successful interventions in the Black Sea have affirmed the model’s effectiveness, prompting expansion into the Mediterranean, including new projects in Malta, France, and Tunisia.
