ClassNK has granted an approval in principle (AiP) for an ammonia-fueled LPG/NH3 carrier, a joint initiative by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and MITSUI E&S. This certification confirms the vessel’s feasibility regarding regulatory and safety standards.
Ammonia, a zero-carbon fuel that emits no CO2 during combustion, is gaining traction in the maritime industry. Ongoing studies and development projects aim to facilitate the practical use of ammonia-fueled ships. In 2021, before specific international ammonia fuel standards were established, ClassNK introduced ‘Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels’ to support innovative projects in this area.
These guidelines outline necessary requirements for installation, controls, and safety devices to mitigate risks to vessels, crew, and the environment. In December 2024, the ‘Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships Using Ammonia as Fuel’ were approved at MSC 109, following ClassNK’s proposal to the IMO via the Japanese government.
ClassNK evaluated the vessel’s design based on its safety guidelines and conducted a risk assessment through HAZID. After confirming compliance with all requirements, ClassNK issued the AiP, marking a significant step toward the adoption of ammonia as a maritime fuel.
