The first successful ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of ammonia in Western Australia marks a significant milestone in maritime decarbonization, led by the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD). Conducted under the oversight of the Pilbara Port Authority (PPA) at Port Dampier, this pilot demonstrated the safe and effective execution of ammonia transfers in real-world offshore conditions.

Yara Clean Ammonia, a key partner in the initiative alongside GCMD and PPA, facilitated the supply of ammonia and chartered the Green Pioneer of MOL, one of the gas carriers involved. Their contributions included technical expertise in safety studies, risk assessments, and emergency response planning.

Building on insights from a previous safety study in Singapore, the trial confirmed that ammonia STS transfers can be safe and scalable with appropriate controls. This pilot has generated essential data and best practices for future ammonia bunkering operations globally.

Murali Srinivasan, SVP Commercial at Yara Clean Ammonia, emphasized the trial’s importance, stating, “This successful trial is a pivotal step towards building trust in ammonia as a zero-to-near-zero emission maritime fuel. It demonstrates that, with the right safeguards, ammonia bunkering is not only feasible but practical.”
