During a recent inspection, AMSA officials uncovered multiple issues aboard a vessel, identifying a total of 18 deficiencies, four of which were deemed detainable. Following the rectification of these issues, the vessel has been prohibited from entering Australian waters until September 4, 2026.

The Maritime Labour Convention mandates that vessel owners uphold minimum standards for seafarers’ living and working conditions. These standards include ensuring timely wage payments, providing safe accommodations, guaranteeing adequate rest, and facilitating access to support services.

Greg Witherall, AMSA’s Acting Executive Director of Operations, emphasized the organization’s commitment to seafarer welfare, stating, “AMSA will always act decisively when seafarer welfare is confirmed at risk.” He highlighted the detention of the Ocean Bright as a clear example of AMSA’s enforcement of the Maritime Labour Convention, demonstrating a robust stance on protecting seafarers’ rights when violations occur.
