The Australian Border Force (ABF) has achieved initial success with Operation BROADSTAFF, intercepting two foreign fishing vessels in northern Queensland and the Torres Strait over the weekend, preventing illegal fishing activities. Launched last week, this operation aims to deter and disrupt illegal foreign fishing in Australian waters.
On February 14 and 15, 2026, ABF officers from Maritime Border Command, in collaboration with partner agencies, intercepted the vessels near Hawkesbury Island and Thursday Island. Inspections revealed that illegal fishing had not yet begun, but officers discovered significant quantities of salt and fishing equipment onboard. Following consultations with the Australian Fisheries Management Authority, the ABF seized the items and escorted both vessels out of Australian waters.
Acting Deputy Commander Brooke Dewar emphasized the importance of community involvement, noting that one vessel was reported by a local resident. She highlighted the essential role of local knowledge in monitoring suspicious activities in the Torres Strait and reiterated the ABF’s commitment to engaging with the community to enhance situational awareness.
Operation BROADSTAFF continues, with more activities planned in the region. Since January 1, 2026, the ABF has intercepted 13 foreign fishing vessels in northern Queensland and the Torres Strait.
