After Operation LUNAR was halted in December 2024, the Australian Border Force (ABF) has taken action against twelve illegal foreign fishing vessels in the waters near the Northern Territory. They managed to confiscate more than six tonnes of sea cucumbers, 500 kg of other catches, and over two tonnes of salt, which is commonly used to preserve the catch.
On December 9, two of the foreign fishing vessels that were intercepted were handled in accordance with Australian law. This signifies a significant victory in the ongoing battle against illegal fishing activities that threaten Australia’s marine ecosystem and seafood sustainability.
The ABF’s relentless efforts in monitoring and intercepting illegal foreign fishing vessels demonstrate their commitment to upholding Australia’s maritime laws and protecting the country’s marine resources. By seizing large quantities of illicit catches and conducting appropriate disposal of offenders, the ABF is sending a strong message that illegal fishing activities will not be tolerated in Australian waters.
