Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to Greenroom Robotics for its innovative maritime autonomy software, GAMA. This milestone marks the first time a maritime autonomy software enabling self-navigation has received AiP from BV, representing a significant step forward in the field of maritime robotics and autonomous operations.
GAMA utilizes artificial intelligence to deliver a fully autonomous navigation system. It integrates data from various onboard sensors, enhancing situational awareness and vessel monitoring, while facilitating decision-making and control. The software can be operated from onboard or remotely, and its modular, scalable design allows for easy integration, enabling any vessel to transition into a fully autonomous craft.
The AiP signifies that GAMA’s design principles meet the relevant BV regulations for autonomous and remotely operated vessels, based on a thorough design-level assessment. This approval streamlines the integration of autonomy into both new and existing vessels, reducing risks for defense and commercial operators while paving the way for full certification.
This assessment adhered to BV’s NI641 “Guidelines for Autonomous Shipping,” providing an independent evaluation of the system’s technical approach. The AiP follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between BV and Greenroom Robotics in 2024, aimed at fostering advancements in maritime robotics and autonomous navigation.
