A merchant vessel successfully repelled a pirate attack in the Bab-el-Mandeb off Yemen’s coast early Friday. This incident highlights ongoing security concerns as major shipping lines cautiously consider resuming routes through the Red Sea and Suez Canal. Reports from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) indicated that about 15 small craft approached the bulk carrier, identified as the Bobic, prompting the onboard Armed Security Team to engage in gunfire with the attackers.
During the first assault, the Bobic maintained speed while changing course, and a second attack soon followed with two skiffs and a nearby suspected mothership. Another vessel, the Globe Aliki, was in the vicinity but was not targeted during this confrontation. Following the incidents, the Bobic altered its destination to indicate the presence of armed guards, and it safely continued its journey with its crew unharmed.
These events come as the maritime industry begins to see a revival in container services through the Red Sea, with companies like Ocean Alliance and Maersk planning to restore Suez Canal transits. Despite a temporary suspension of maritime operations announced by Houthi forces, experts stress that risks in the area remain, urging caution among shipping operators.
