Survitec, a key provider of survival technology solutions, is urging shipowners, managers, and shipyards to prepare for upcoming international fire protection regulations. Effective January 1, 2026, the IMO mandates fixed water monitors on the weather decks of Roro and Ropax vessels as stipulated in changes to SOLAS Chapter II-2 and the FSS Code. This decision stems from increasing fire incidents involving vehicle freight, particularly those with electric vehicles, highlighting the inadequacies of current fire safety measures.

Water is typically preferred for its cooling properties, yet traditional sprinkler and flooding systems may prove insufficient. Fixed water monitors present a quick, efficient solution, offering targeted, high-performance fire protection. They are also cost-effective for smaller vessels where retrofitting conventional flooding systems can be challenging.

Remote-controlled monitors provide further flexibility, allowing crew members to operate them from a safe distance, enhancing firefighting capabilities while minimizing risks to personnel. The regulations require two water monitors for ships under 30 meters and four for larger vessels, each delivering a minimum of 2.0 liters per minute per square meter, with a total flow rate of at least 1,250 liters per minute.
