Kongsberg Maritime is celebrating 50 years since launching its first dynamic positioning (DP) system, a Norwegian innovation that revolutionized offshore operations and enhanced safety and efficiency at sea. The journey began in the 1970s when challenging conditions in the North Sea necessitated a new approach to anchoring. In 1977, the world’s first Norwegian DP system was successfully tested on the Seaway Eagle, marking a pivotal moment in maritime technology.
This groundbreaking system allowed vessels to maintain their position without anchors, utilizing sensors and thrusters to counteract environmental forces in real time. Vegard Sæterlid, Head of Positioning and Manoeuvring at Kongsberg Maritime, emphasized the impact of DP, stating it was crucial for the oil industry’s expansion and enabled safe operations in extreme conditions.
Today, Kongsberg Maritime leads in DP technology, with over 4,000 systems in use across various offshore vessels and platforms. The latest K-Pos generation integrates advanced sensor data and user-friendly interfaces, enhancing operational efficiency while minimizing fuel consumption and emissions.
Dynamic positioning is now essential in modern maritime operations, facilitating offshore energy projects, research, and paving the way for future innovations like remote and unmanned vessels, ultimately promoting sustainability and safety in the industry.
