The vessel departed from the Caofeidan port area in Tangshan on November 27 and traveled southward past Ningbo and Fuzhou, navigating through the Haitan Strait, as indicated by AIS data from Pole Star Global.

On December 3, at approximately 1015 GMT, the Hua De 858 ran aground on a shoal situated between Xiaori Island and Dasheyu Island. Following the grounding, the ship fractured amidships, according to reports from Chinese maritime safety authorities. Images from the incident reveal significant damage to the freighter’s hull, which has split into two sections. Since the grounding, the vessel’s AIS signal has ceased to appear on commercial tracking systems. The Hua De 858 is classified as a Chinese coastal freighter engaged in domestic trade, lacking an IMO number or an established pattern of international operations.
