CLASSNK, a prominent classification society, has released the fourth edition of its “FAQs on the FuelEU Maritime,” offering essential updates for the shipping industry as it adapts to new environmental regulations. This edition clarifies conditions for cumulative penalties and the priority order for fuels in greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity calculations under the FuelEU Maritime regulation, which takes effect on January 1, 2025, for ships over 5,000 gross tonnage calling at EU ports.
Key updates include detailed information on cumulative penalty conditions, outlining how penalties may escalate for repeated non-compliance. Additionally, the guidance specifies the prioritized order for fuels in GHG intensity calculations, enabling better utilization of low-GHG-intensity fuels.
ClassNK’s updated guidance reflects insights from the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) webinars and official documents. The organization remains committed to assisting the shipping sector in achieving environmental compliance through its “ClassNK Transition Support Services,” providing crucial resources and guidance.
The “FAQs on the FuelEU Maritime (4th Edition)” is available for download on the ClassNK website. While this guidance is current as of June 2025, ClassNK will continue to update stakeholders as further details on the practical implementation of FuelEU Maritime are clarified by the EU.
