The trial concerning the fatal collision between the Commodore Goodwill and the fishing trawler L’Ecume II continues, with two crew members, Artur Sevash-Zade and Lewis Carr, facing charges of manslaughter. The incident, which occurred on December 8, 2022, claimed the lives of three crew members from the L’Ecume II. Sevash-Zade testified that Carr had identified the L’Ecume II as a “dangerous” vessel shortly before the collision.
During the trial, the jury reviewed police interviews with the accused. On the morning of the incident, Carr had sent Sevash-Zade for breakfast, leaving him alone on the bridge. Sevash-Zade noted that he tracked the L’Ecume II on radar but later observed it approaching dangerously close. Despite sounding the horn moments before impact, the collision occurred, resulting in the loss of life.
Carr stated he attempted to maneuver the Goodwill to avoid the trawler, believing it was passing safely. The case is charged as gross negligence manslaughter, with the jury having the option to consider a lesser charge if they find the defendants not guilty. The trial is expected to last four weeks under Commissioner Sir John Saunders.
