President Miguel Diaz-Canel has strongly criticized a recent incident involving the seizure of a Venezuelan oil tanker by U.S. forces in Caribbean waters, labeling it a serious breach of international law. In a post on X, he described the act as “piracy and maritime terrorism,” calling for global condemnation of what he deems imperial aggression.

Venezuelan Executive Vice President Delcy Rodriguez corroborated Diaz-Canel’s remarks, stating that the operation was executed by U.S. military personnel in international waters. She characterized the act as a crime against humanity, navigation, and national sovereignty. Rodriguez emphasized that this incident violates multiple international agreements, including Article 3 of the 1988 Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation and Article 2 of the United Nations Charter.

Moreover, she condemned the “colonialist model” allegedly imposed by Washington through intimidation and the unlawful use of force. Rodriguez reaffirmed Venezuela’s commitment to pursuing its economic and energy development independently, with the support of its citizens and international allies. The situation underscores escalating tensions in the region and the broader implications for international maritime law.
