At least 10 people were killed and 18 injured when the oil tanker MT Federal II caught fire early Wednesday during repairs in Batam, Indonesia’s Riau Islands province. The fire erupted around 4 a.m. local time at a shipyard, approximately 20 kilometers from Singapore, according to local police chief Zaenal Arifin.
The vessel was docked for maintenance and was not carrying oil at the time. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. All victims were workers involved in the repair efforts, with some sustaining severe injuries.
Authorities have not yet determined the ownership of the MT Federal II. This incident follows a similar fire in June at the same shipyard, which resulted in four fatalities and nine injuries, leading to police identifying two individuals for potential safety violations.
The local community is now grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the fire.
