The Singapore-flagged dual-fuel ammonia-powered vessel Fortescue Green Pioneer has arrived in the U.K. to showcase the potential of ammonia as a sustainable marine fuel. This innovative vessel, powered by four-stroke engines that can run on both ammonia and diesel, aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry. The U.K. Government fully supports this ambitious mission towards a more sustainable shipping sector.
To ensure compliance with U.K. regulatory requirements, the Fortescue Green Pioneer has been working closely with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) during its time in the U.K. The vessel has docked at the Port of Southampton for Port State Control inspections by the MCA’s Survey and Inspection team. It will then proceed to West India Dock in London, operated by Canal and River Trust, to demonstrate its technology and capabilities to key maritime stakeholders, partners, and the public.
Maritime Minister Mike Kane expressed enthusiasm for the vessel’s arrival, highlighting the importance of innovation in driving decarbonization within the shipping industry. The U.K. is committed to supporting the development of alternative fuels and technologies through programs like UK SHORE to establish the country as a leader in clean energy. The MCA’s Director of UK Customer Services, Lars Lippuner, emphasized the agency’s collaboration with Fortescue to bring this groundbreaking vessel to Europe and showcase the shift towards more sustainable marine fuels.
Fortescue Executive Chairman and Founder Andrew Forrest conveyed the vessel’s symbolic message of innovation and leadership in transitioning away from fossil fuels. The Fortescue Green Pioneer represents the company’s commitment to pioneering sustainable solutions in the maritime sector, setting a precedent for a greener future in shipping.
