On March 5, 2026, France has initiated discussions with Italy and Greece to enhance coordination in the Eastern Mediterranean amid rising tensions due to the conflict in Iran. French President Emmanuel Macron held separate conversations with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, emphasizing a united European front.
During these talks, the leaders agreed to collaborate on military shipments to Cyprus and coordinate efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. This comes in the wake of a drone strike that targeted a British air base in Cyprus, marking a concerning escalation of hostilities towards European territories. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer clarified that the base was not being utilized by US bombers, although additional drones were intercepted near the area.
In response to the situation, Macron announced plans to deploy an aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean, aimed at securing maritime routes and protecting Europe’s economic interests. This decision follows a spike in energy prices driven by ongoing conflicts involving the US and Israel against Iran, which have further strained global supply chains.
