The Finnish coast guard has dispatched a patrol vessel and a tugboat to assist an oil tanker that experienced engine failure in the Gulf of Finland. The 183-meter Panama-flagged M/T Jazz oil tanker was drifting south of Finland’s Hanko Peninsula before anchoring in the area, according to a statement from the coast guard. The primary goal of the operation is to prevent any potential environmental damage that may result from the situation.
Fortunately, the incident involving the M/T Jazz oil tanker is not believed to be connected to recent damage to undersea power and telecoms cables in the area. The coast guard has also confirmed that seabed infrastructure is not at risk with the ship’s current anchoring position. It is important to note that the Jazz was en route to the Russian port of Primorsk and was not carrying any oil cargo at the time of the engine failure.
The Finnish coast guard’s prompt response to the situation highlights their commitment to safeguarding the marine environment and preventing potential disasters. The deployment of the patrol vessel and tugboat demonstrates their proactive approach to addressing maritime incidents and ensuring the safety of vessels in distress. The cooperation between the coast guard and the crew of the M/T Jazz is crucial in managing the situation effectively and minimizing any negative impact on the environment.
