Norwegian shipowner MPC Container Ships (MPCC) has recently taken delivery of its first dual-fueled methanol container ship from the Chinese shipyard Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering. This vessel is the first of two dual-fuel methanol container ships that MPCC has ordered from Chinese shipyards, with both ships being secured by 15-year time charter agreements with North Sea Container Line (NCL). The ships are equipped with dual-fuel engines that allow them to operate on green methanol, significantly reducing CO2 emissions by up to 95%.
The delivery of this innovative vessel marks a significant step towards a more sustainable future in the maritime industry. The vessel will be chartered to North Sea Container Line for 15 years, providing reliable and efficient service along the Norwegian coastline. MPCC expressed their gratitude to the shipyard, crew, and partners who contributed to making this project a reality. An official naming ceremony for the vessel is planned to take place in Europe soon.
In April 2024, MPCC secured a $55 million pre and post-delivery financing agreement with Deutsche Bank and SINOSURE for the construction of these two dual-fuel methanol container ships. This financing agreement demonstrates MPCC’s commitment to investing in environmentally friendly technologies and reducing their carbon footprint. The company’s decision to adopt methanol as a fuel source showcases their dedication to sustainability and innovation in the shipping industry.
