Japan has reported another tragic incident involving a fishing vessel and an inter-island cargo ship in its busy maritime lanes. In this latest collision, four individuals lost their lives, while nine crew members from the commercial fishing vessel were rescued without major injuries. The Hachinohe Coast Guard received a distress call from the cargo ship Suehiro Maru, which had collided with the fishing boat Kofuk Maru No. 65 about 12 miles north of Misawa fishing port.
The cargo ship, en route from Kimitsu to Tomakomai, sustained visible damage to its bow, as shown in images released by the Coast Guard. The impact caused the fishing boat to capsize and sink rapidly. All 13 crew members aboard the fishing vessel were wearing life jackets, which likely aided in the rescue efforts. Six crew members on the cargo ship were unharmed.
Despite the challenges posed by darkness, a nearby fishing vessel joined the search, and they managed to rescue nine crew members. Unfortunately, four individuals were initially reported missing. One was later found entangled in a net, while three others were discovered unconscious and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. This incident underscores ongoing safety concerns regarding maritime traffic in northern Japan’s fishing waters. The Japan Coast Guard is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding these incidents.
