HD Hyundai Robotics and HD Hyundai Samho are collaborating to test German robots in shipbuilding, rather than using Hyundai’s own robotic technologies. Hyundai, which owns Boston Dynamics and has its in-house automation division, will partner with Neura Robotics from Germany for this initiative.

Neura’s newly launched humanoid robot, 4NE1, is designed to assist in industrial workflows, particularly when skilled labor is scarce. This AI-powered robot can learn from its surroundings and handle complex tasks, with a payload capacity of up to 220 pounds.

Under the partnership, HD Hyundai Samho will provide shipyard test sites for Neura’s robots, while HD Hyundai Robotics will assess their performance in ship assembly and welding tasks. This marks the second robotics partnership announced by HD Hyundai this year, following a May agreement with Vazil Company and Persona AI to develop a humanoid welding robot, with prototypes expected by late 2026.

Facing a significant workforce shortage, HD Hyundai is seeking labor-saving solutions as many experienced shipbuilders retire and fewer younger workers enter the industry. As of 2024, around 16% of South Korea’s shipyard workforce consists of foreign workers, a figure that is expected to increase.
