Greece has officially addressed the International Maritime Organization (IMO), urging the global shipping community to unite in response to escalating tensions in the Red Sea. This call follows severe attacks on Greek-owned bulk carriers, Magic Seas and Eternity C, marking the first incidents of this nature since October 2024.
The Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs raised these concerns during the IMO Council meeting in London, advocating for the restoration of law and order in alignment with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez condemned the violence, labeling it a “deplorable” breach of international law and freedom of navigation, and called for enhanced diplomatic efforts to mitigate threats.
In response to the situation, the Greek Ministry has issued guidelines for shipowners to ensure safer passage through the region, emphasizing heightened precautions. These recommendations also extend to foreign-flagged vessels owned by Greeks, considering the potential presence of Greek seafarers on board.
According to IMO data, there were at least 69 attacks on international shipping linked to geopolitical tensions from November 2023 to October 2024, with the recent assaults on Magic Seas and Eternity C being the first reported since then.
